Shopping Center Surveyors

Shopping centers are great. If not for them, where would we get Chinese food, have our clothes dry cleaned, and of course get that exotic coffee beverage each morning? Shopping centers are not usually associated with the environment, and if so it is usually because of the negative environmental impact of all of the pavement.

That is where our Shopping Center Surveyor Program comes in.

With approximately 90 shopping centers in Prince William County it's crucial to view shopping centers not as separate from the environment, but more as a part of our built environment.

For that reason it's important for us to understand how much trash is being generated at these centers and how well it's handled.

As a participant in this program, volunteers use a 32-point survey to inspect the property and report on their findings. From everything to whether they have recycling, to trash that might be filling the parking lots and common areas, volunteers go out quarterly and survey the shopping center and report those findings to us. We then use that data to help shopping centers minimize the impact their actions have on our environment.
