Program Guidelines

The Adopt-A-School program is an extension of the Adopt-a-Spot program. It encourages students of all ages to take responsibility for keeping school property clean and to take pride in the appearance of the school.  The program includes the cleaning of the school’s sidewalks, playground, ball fields and common areas.

Commitment

Schools participating in the Adopt-A-School program make a commitment to clean the school grounds at least six times for one school year.

Eligibility

All Prince William County Schools (private and public) are eligible to participate in the program.

Guidelines

(1)  Participants in the Adopt-A-School program must be current students/faculty at a Prince William County school.  If students are under the age of 18, they must have a signed waiver by a parent/guardian authorizing their participation.  The waiver will be provided by the Prince William Clean Community Council.

(2)  An adult sponsor/supervisor must complete and submit an Adopt-a-School registration form.  This form will remain on file at the Prince William Clean Community Council.

(3)  Students must be chaperoned by an authorized adult at all times and abide by all school and safety regulations.

(4)  Students/Sponsors will not attempt to clean up dangerous debris (i.e.:  needles, broken glass, etc.) but will report these items to school personnel for proper handling and disposal.

(5)  Students and sponsors/chaperones agree to attend a program orientation presented by the Prince William Clean Community Council. The session will take place during school hours or immediately following the end of the school day.  Guidelines and procedures will be presented at this session.  In the event that a student is unable to attend the initial orientation, the sponsor/chaperone will be responsible for conducting a subsequent orientation.

(6)  Participants must commit to one school year (September – June) of service and commit to cleaning the school grounds at least six times during the school year.

(7)  Participants in the Adopt-A-School program authorize photos to be taken and used in print, broadcast and electronic formats for the purposes of promoting environmental education programs within the Prince William Clean Community Council.

(8)  At the end of each clean up, the sponsor/chaperone will provide the Prince William Clean Community Council with a volunteer log including the names of the volunteers, chaperones and dates/hours volunteered by each student.  Students participating in the Adopt-A-School program are eligible to use the hours volunteered toward any mandatory community service hours.  The Prince William Clean Community Council will validate legitimate volunteer hours.

(9)  The Prince William Clean Community Council will provide each school sponsor with trash bags to assist in the handling and disposal of collected litter.  All litter must be disposed of according to school guidelines.

(10)  Schools that have existing Ecology Clubs are eligible to use the Adopt-A-School Program as one of its
activities.
