Adopt-A-Spot Program Outline & Guidelines

Participating individuals, organizations, and businesses agree to keep a designated area, other than a highway, cleared of litter for a one-year period (July – June) scheduling at least nine routine clean ups.

In exchange, volunteers are provided materials to help them with the cleanups and a sign bearing their name will be posted in the area.  At the end of the one-year period, the volunteers will receive a special certificate of appreciation and may renew their agreement.

Adoptable locations could include; parks, vacant lots, parking lots, walkways, median strips, campuses, public grounds, or other littered/graffitied areas.

Parties interested in highway cleanups are referred to the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) "Adopt-a-Highway" program.  Those parties not interested in highway cleanups should be encouraged to participate in an Adopt-a-Spot program.

The Adopt-A-Spot program is open to any local community organization, business or individual.  (Note Group Leader must be at least 18 years or older.)  However, the Prince William Clean Community Council reserves the right to deny adoption requests or requests for signs or other supportive program material for any reason whatsoever.

The Prince William Clean Community Council (PWCCC) will coordinate, review and approve proposed area(s) of adoption in Prince William County.  If there is a question of safety or health, the proposed adoption will not be approved.

Participants must review safety and other guidelines before each and every clean up.  No participant may be involved in a litter cleanup without reviewing and understanding the Adopt-A-Spot safety guidelines.  Although clean ups are not under the direction or supervision of the Council, all clean up leaders are instructed to cover these safety rules with all clean up team members before anyone is allowed to begin the clean up.  If any of these safety rules are missing from your packet, please notify the Council immediately!  Do not schedule any clean up until you have received and reviewed safety information and guidelines.

The Council will supply group leaders with safety information and, as requested, trash bags and safety vests.  These materials must be picked up at the Council's office.

If necessary, the Council will assist participants with arrangements for disposal of collected debris.  These arrangements MUST be made in advance of the cleanup.

Participants are encouraged to separate and recycle appropriate materials.

A sign noting the program (Adopt-a-Spot) and the participants' name will be provided.

After each cleanup, adopting groups must file an activity report detailing the number of people involved, number of bags of litter picked up, how many bags of recyclable materials were separated out and type of material, and hours spent.  Report forms must be completed and delivered to the Council.

Adopting groups are encouraged to schedule two of their nine cleanups in April and October to coincide with local countywide clean up campaigns.

Group leaders are required to keep the PWCCC apprised of a current mailing address for the adopting individual/group.

The PWCCC reserves the right to revise these terms as needed.  The adopting group or individual should receive copies of these program conditions, the signed agreement, the safety tips and the activity reporting form.
